Rocky, wooded Islands with isolated bays and steady afternoon winds help one imagine what Homer’s hero Ulysses must have felt finally returning home after his long Odyssey. The Ionian Islands on the west coast of Greece offer the quintessential Greek sailing experience.
With English friends in tow, we met Lisa, Marcello, and their Dutch friend Donne four days into our 18 day cruise at Pettrite about an hour south of Corfu airport. This late August, early September 2007 bareboat charter took us from Corfu to as far south as Ithaca in the southern Ionian Island group. We anchored off the beautiful tourist towns of Fiskardho and Parga, discovered little visited Vonistsa and O. Astakou on the mainland, and caught our fair share of fish, all while enjoying sails filled with 15-20 knot winds for most of our passages. After two weeks in this Greek paradise, it’s no doubt that it is a must return destination.
