Charter Bareboat Sailing — Radio Etiquette

Looking for a summary of how to communicate over your VHF radio when bareboating in local waters or overseas, check out this article by Rod Glover “Say Again” posted on Sail.com.  Rod explains common mistakes, gives guidelines on initiating and answering calls, and explains proper emergancy procedures. It’s not a bad refresher for those of us that tend to sail locally and infrequently use VHF communications in today’s mobile world.

Will the cat cut the mustard at the America’s Cup?

“So for all its memorable moments, the monohull racing was, on the whole, not that great. And rather than being a speed race, it was like watch two time-bombs to see which would blow up first – whether it be through operator error, or boats and sails over stressing and exploding.”

So says Richard Gladwell in his 22 January 2011 Sail-World.com post after a detailed analysis of the monohull technology in past America’s Cup designs. But, this is just the appetizer before offering his early trial experience on the AC45 catamarans in New Zealand.

For the main course, Richard goes on to describe AC45 handling in both moderate and light conditions. Any sailor will enjoy reading his detailed analysis of the potential of this one design in the 13 regatta America’s Cup World Series circuit and his interpolation to the open AC72 that will compete for the Cup during the summer of 2013 in San Francisco.

And Richard’s bottom line – “The cat would win – paws down.”

Charter Bareboat Sailing – Thailand

With names like Longkawi, Ko Rok Nok, and Butang Islands, charter bareboat sailing in Thailand sounds even more exotic than sailing the Seychelles. In “Taste of the East” Nigel Calder provides an informative overview of charter bareboating with Sunsail in this exotic location just degrees off the equator in his usual thorough style.

Bareboat Charter – Mooring In Capraia Italy

Charter Bareboat - Capraia Mooring

Mooring in Capraia

The mooring field in Porto Capraia just outside the marina entrance is quite interesting. Since anchoring is now illegal anywhere in front of the main port of Capraia, even though many boats do it and risk high fines, they have developed a mooring field with a three line system that mimics Med Mooring to a dock. They can accommodate 40+ boats moored side by side in the open bay.  How does it work?

  1. All three mooring lines have leads that are attached to a three pronged mooring buoy
  2. You reverse towards the three prong mooring buoy to pick up the three mooring line leads
  3. The bow lead is first gathered to secure the bow mooring line then the two stern leads are gathered to secure the port and starboard stern mooring lines.

The spaces can be reserved ahead of time (I think the day before – the SunCharter base manager called on our behalf, as he said it was highly recommended during the summer months). You are required to call into the port master upon approach. We asked for additional guidance admitting that we had never seen this kind of mooring set-up before. They were quick and friendly, coming out immediately on a dinghy to get us secured to the three point mooring system within minutes of arrival. Lucky for us it was a calm evening since the mooring field is outside the sea wall and completely open to the north, northeast. Normally the boats are side by side as in the mooring field but given our early September timing and lack of crowd, they were kind to tie in all the yachts in every other slot to leave a bit more privacy.

Charter Bareboating in Elba, Italy – Sailing Stuff (Part 1)

Charter Bareboat Sailing Elba Charters

Elba Cruising Guide

Here are some navigation insights from our 1 week charter bareboat sailing vacation around the east and southern coasts of Elba with passages to Corsica and the Italian Island of Capraia. More detail can be found in the Commented Map and Detailed Trip Log.

Weather – Weather was fantastic, not a single day of rain during our 1 week bareboat charter. The wind blew steadily out of the NE between 15-20kn for all, but, two days making for some fantastic sailing. Getting the forecasts was simple with our palm devices as coverage was constant everywhere. We used eurometeo.it as well as windfinder, picking up the forecasts of the center of Elba as well off Cap Corse.

Corsica Passage while bareboatingPassages – Navigating was straightforward with the biggest care needed leaving and returning to the marina in Portoferraio just because of the heavy traffic and ferry lanes. Unfortunately, our 42M passage to Corsica was done under power due to the lack of wind that day. Capraia has substantial restrictions approaching from the north so it is best to approach the west and east side coasts from the south. The multi-colored cliffs on the south part of the island are amazingly beautiful and are dotted with interesting tower ruins.

Anchorages – All anchorages had excellent holding in sand though many were open to sea lane traffic (although distant) so we experienced bounce or roll some evenings. The worse roll was experienced where the anchorage was most exposed to major shipping lanes: Fetovaia in Elba and off the Iles Finocchiera in Corsica.

Charter Bareboat Anchorage in Elba

Barbarossa Anchorage

Barbarossa – Perhaps this was the most beautiful anchorage of the entire trip and certainly the most calm.

Lancona – This very pretty bay is said to be very busy with day trippers and water sports though we didn’t experience this so late in the season, not with the winds that were pretty constant at 25 knots that day. It was a blustery night and the anchor held very well on the sandy bottom.

Fetovaia – It’s one of the most beautiful on the island but is a very busy anchorage as a staging point for passages to Corsica and the Southern Tuscan Islands. It also has a fair amount of bounce most likely from wave action caused by the major shipping lanes to the west and south of Elba wrapping around the southwester peninsula.

Cap Corse – Great sea urchin beds, but, subject to quite a bit of current and from what we were told can be treacherous in bad weather as well as subject to very quick weather changes. It was an absolutely spectacular evening sky.
