Charter Bareboat Sailing – Thailand

With names like Longkawi, Ko Rok Nok, and Butang Islands, charter bareboat sailing in Thailand sounds even more exotic than sailing the Seychelles. In “Taste of the East” Nigel Calder provides an informative overview of charter bareboating with Sunsail in this exotic location just degrees off the equator in his usual thorough style.

Bareboat Charter – Mooring In Capraia Italy

Charter Bareboat - Capraia Mooring

Mooring in Capraia

The mooring field in Porto Capraia just outside the marina entrance is quite interesting. Since anchoring is now illegal anywhere in front of the main port of Capraia, even though many boats do it and risk high fines, they have developed a mooring field with a three line system that mimics Med Mooring to a dock. They can accommodate 40+ boats moored side by side in the open bay.  How does it work?

  1. All three mooring lines have leads that are attached to a three pronged mooring buoy
  2. You reverse towards the three prong mooring buoy to pick up the three mooring line leads
  3. The bow lead is first gathered to secure the bow mooring line then the two stern leads are gathered to secure the port and starboard stern mooring lines.

The spaces can be reserved ahead of time (I think the day before – the SunCharter base manager called on our behalf, as he said it was highly recommended during the summer months). You are required to call into the port master upon approach. We asked for additional guidance admitting that we had never seen this kind of mooring set-up before. They were quick and friendly, coming out immediately on a dinghy to get us secured to the three point mooring system within minutes of arrival. Lucky for us it was a calm evening since the mooring field is outside the sea wall and completely open to the north, northeast. Normally the boats are side by side as in the mooring field but given our early September timing and lack of crowd, they were kind to tie in all the yachts in every other slot to leave a bit more privacy.

Charter Bareboating in Elba, Italy – Sailing Stuff (Part 1)

Charter Bareboat Sailing Elba Charters

Elba Cruising Guide

Here are some navigation insights from our 1 week charter bareboat sailing vacation around the east and southern coasts of Elba with passages to Corsica and the Italian Island of Capraia. More detail can be found in the Commented Map and Detailed Trip Log.

Weather – Weather was fantastic, not a single day of rain during our 1 week bareboat charter. The wind blew steadily out of the NE between 15-20kn for all, but, two days making for some fantastic sailing. Getting the forecasts was simple with our palm devices as coverage was constant everywhere. We used eurometeo.it as well as windfinder, picking up the forecasts of the center of Elba as well off Cap Corse.

Corsica Passage while bareboatingPassages – Navigating was straightforward with the biggest care needed leaving and returning to the marina in Portoferraio just because of the heavy traffic and ferry lanes. Unfortunately, our 42M passage to Corsica was done under power due to the lack of wind that day. Capraia has substantial restrictions approaching from the north so it is best to approach the west and east side coasts from the south. The multi-colored cliffs on the south part of the island are amazingly beautiful and are dotted with interesting tower ruins.

Anchorages – All anchorages had excellent holding in sand though many were open to sea lane traffic (although distant) so we experienced bounce or roll some evenings. The worse roll was experienced where the anchorage was most exposed to major shipping lanes: Fetovaia in Elba and off the Iles Finocchiera in Corsica.

Charter Bareboat Anchorage in Elba

Barbarossa Anchorage

Barbarossa – Perhaps this was the most beautiful anchorage of the entire trip and certainly the most calm.

Lancona – This very pretty bay is said to be very busy with day trippers and water sports though we didn’t experience this so late in the season, not with the winds that were pretty constant at 25 knots that day. It was a blustery night and the anchor held very well on the sandy bottom.

Fetovaia – It’s one of the most beautiful on the island but is a very busy anchorage as a staging point for passages to Corsica and the Southern Tuscan Islands. It also has a fair amount of bounce most likely from wave action caused by the major shipping lanes to the west and south of Elba wrapping around the southwester peninsula.

Cap Corse – Great sea urchin beds, but, subject to quite a bit of current and from what we were told can be treacherous in bad weather as well as subject to very quick weather changes. It was an absolutely spectacular evening sky.

Charter Bareboating in Elba, Italy – Provisioning/Living Aboard

Charter Bareboat Sailing: Capraia Island

Capraia Anchorage

Here are some insight on provisioning and living aboard during our one week charter bareboat sailing in Elba, Corsica, and Capraia.

Food and Drink

Provisions – There are several large supermarkets not far from the Edilnautica marina that have everything you’ll need for a multi-week charter and you can park or have a taxi drop you off within 10m (yards) of the boat to unload your provisions. Also, shopping in Italian supermarkets is as good as going to an outdoor market as the produce, meats, and fish are usually very fresh.

Food- Italy of course has an excellent fresh food culture, so it is hard to go wrong with anything. Although we bought a massive amount of fresh stuff, we also stocked up on many delicious jars of fresh sauces such as green and red pestos, radicchio and mushroom-truffle purées that are versatile to use on pasta, risotto or even just on bread. We also found delicious sun dried tomatoes, porcini mushrooms and many other veggies under olive oil with no preservatives that we used either in sauces with our main courses, tossed into pasta or even just on their own with our sundowners.

Drink – Tuscany is wine heaven. We found excellent chiantis and several other less known varietals that were quite delicious. The local Elba wine is quite nice, although not super elegant. The market stocked all other spirits that one could look for: grappa, whisky, campari, martini, as well as plenty of mixers such as rum, contreau and just about any juice for tropical sundowners.

Living Aboard

Charter Bareboat Sailing: Marcello Swimming

Crystal Clear off Capraia

Making Ice – We had a great marine refrigerator on board and were able to make ice every day using the technique first perfected by our friend Gaetano.

Swimming – Overall the swimming/snorkeling is incredible everywhere we went. We did encounter an infestation of two different kinds of small jelly fish in the waters off of Cap Corse along with quite a bit of current rounding the northern tip of Corsica.

Catching Seafood– If you are a fan of sea urchin, you will have to leave Italy as it’s currently against the law to gather “ricci” around these islands. We are not sure how long the “stop” will last, but, it may eventually be lifted to allow seasonal fishing. It would be best to check with the local authorities before taking any, as we understand the fines are quite high. However, the “ricci” we found around Corse were delicious and legal. We didn’t have any luck catching fish while making our passages to and from Corsica.

Charter Bareboat Vacations in St. Martin

“You could spend an entire week exploring St. Martin and the nearby islands, never sail more than 21 miles in a day and never get bored. With a few extra days to spend, you could also sail over to Nevis and St. Kitts for even more beauty”, says Moorings base manager Corrado Losi as quoted by Meredith Laitos in her Sail Magazine article Much Ado About St. Martin (November 11, 2010).

Meredith gives a great introduction to the St. Martin charter bareboat cruising grounds.  Being a French, Dutch influenced island with British Anguilla nearby, you can sure get your fill of Europe with a Creole twist.  The article is a great overview as she lays out a quick itinerary, recommends some land based excursions (ok shopping and eating), and,  generally, just makes you want to put this bareboating area on your short list.

Charter Bareboating in Elba, Italy – Before Departing

Another last minute charter bareboat vacation, so, we turned to our old friends at Sun Charter, a German Charter company with bases around the Mediterranean. They offered an excellent last minute deal  on a Sun Odyssey 40 we could not refuse.

charter bareboat sailing - ferry to elbaArrival and Transfers — Since we live in Northern Italy, we drove to the Ferry Terminal in Piombino, Tuscany to catch one of the hourly ferries to Portoferraio, the main port of Elba. There’s not much to Piombino, so if you want to experience a bit of Italy, do it before arriving at this rather drab ferry terminal. Piombino is not far from Pisa, Lucca and Florence, or to the north Porto Venere, the Cinque Terre, and Portofino in Liguria.

charter bareboat sailing - accommodatations in elba

Hotel Relais delle Picchiaie

Accommodations —  We booked a first night full pension at Relais delle Picchiaie a 4 star rated hotel 5 km outside of Portoferraio and a short drive to Sun Charter’s base in Edilnautica Marina. Though the hotel has beautiful views and a wonderful pool area, the room we had though didn’t live up to the 4 star rating being a little worn and shoddy. However, the fantastic service and wonderful buffet style grilled dinner more than compensates.

Charter Company — In the past we bareboat chartered from Sun Charter in Corfu, Greece and Marmaris, Turkey and have been extremely happy with their well maintained boats and very knowledgeable services. Actually, we think those two bareboat charter experiences were two of the best we have ever had in 17 years of charter bareboat sailing. Since we prefer to spend our evenings on the hook rather than in marinas, we depend on the local knowledge gained in the area briefings to plan a safe and fun week of charter bareboat sailing

Charter Bareboat Sailing - Dream

Sun Odyessy40 - Dream

.

We were surprised that the base in Elba didn’t meet these same high standards. Our initial check-out and area briefing were weak to the point that we requested an additional session with the base manager. This second briefing was much more informative, but we wouldn’t have called it friendly. However, once underway, we discovered many issues with the boat that upon reporting the problems at the end of the bareboat charter it was apparent that Sun Charter was aware of these problems, but, did not inform us.

Perhaps, this is why the older Sun Odyssey 40 was available within a week’s notice for such a good price. Since our past experiences with Sun Charter have been fantastic, we view this experience as an aberration and still recommend them. We certainly hope that they will take to heart our frank feedback.

Bareboating Italy – The Island of Elba

… a gem of an island off the Tuscan Coast

Elba Insights:   Before Departing   Provisioning/Living Aboard   Sailing Stuff

Charter Bareboat Sailing out of Elba, Italy

Cap Corse

Hop on the ferry from mainland Italy and within an hour you arrive in a bareboating paradise. With picturesque, cliff-lined bays, the warm “turquoise” Tyrrhenian Sea, and passages to Corsica and other Tuscan islands, charter bareboat sailing in Elba offers an accessible sailing adventure “alla Italiana” with options for good bay anchorages as well as beautiful ports . Our one week bareboat charter took us from Portoferraio in the north around the east and southern coast of Elba, to Cap Corse the northern most point of Corsica, and the Italian island of Capraia. We look forward to returning for a longer cruise not only to enjoy Elba again, but also to explore Corsica’s western coast.

Area Insight Overview – We chartered from SunCharter a German company with who we have had great bareboat charter experiences in both Corfu and the southern Turkey. Their Elba base is in Portoferraio, which sits about 45 minutes by ferry from mainland Piombino. As described in the trip itinerary navigation was straightforward, anchorages had great holding, and conditions permitted some fun sailing during our week long charter bareboat vacation. We even experienced a most unique mooring system in the small port of Capraia Island.
