Observations on provisioning and living aboard during a charter on the southern coast of Sardinia.
Food and Drink
Provisions – Cagliari is a large Italian city with huge supermarkets which have every conceivable provision including great fresh food. En route we noticed that restaurants and provisions were easily available in Carloforte on San Pietro Island and in Punto Pula
Food– The local bread specialty “pane carasau” is a super thin cracker like bread that is usually sold tightly wrapped in plastic and holds very well on the boat for the days when fresh bread would go hard and moldy becoming fish food.
Drink – Local wines are good, especially the more full bodied reds like the Cannonau Reserves.
Living Aboard
Swimming – Overall the swimming/snorkeling is incredible everywhere we went. In particular, care is needed swimming across the little channel between the Punto Pula and the small island to the north east as powerboats and zodiacs blaze through the passage in true cowboy style. It is highly advised to keep an inflatable diver buoy tied to an arm.
Catching Seafood– If you are a fan of sea urchin you can find them and also octopus around Isola dei Ratti south of Isola Piano of the coast of San Pietro Island.
Holding tank – Italy has yet to pass a law requiring holding tanks on board, so our charter boat did not have one. The marine head emptied directly into the sea, that’s right even when anchored in bays. Guess you should keep that in mind when swimming in anchorages particularly in the mornings and around large boats.
